Groovy men’s fashion from the Sears catalogue, circa 1974.

This section of Living in the Past is called “The Conversation Pit.”

A Conversation Pit was a trend that saw its heyday in the 1970s. Its key feature was a sunken centrepiece, an area of a particular room that by design, forced its inhabitants together in close proximity, in what was hoped to be a cozy and relaxing enclave

The vibe was groovy, man. The intent?

To provide a space where people could congregate and really “get down” (literally) to the nitty-gritty with some deep discussions and good times.

Can you dig it?

Like many trends, however, The Pit saw its time in the spotlight come and go, as did so many other fads we lived through (and survived, fortunately).

Remember these once-hot cultural touchstones?
