When we were left to our own devices
In my neck of the woods, schools are closed for the upcoming solar eclipse.
Why?
Because our local school boards are scared that kids will stare into the sun while under the watch of teachers and administrators.
Better that these occurrences are done under the guidance of parents and babysitters, right?
This decision is yet another instance of a sea change in how kids are dealt with today, in comparison to Generation X kids who were largely left to their own devices (and left to stare into the sun, if they so desired).
Rather than taking this unique and rare occurrence as learning opportunity for the children, the powers that be dropped the ball. They shut it down, along with the doors to educational facilities as well.
